husband dick
I wasn’t sure if I could make it work
It wasn’t what I wanted for myself
It didn’t fill me up
Or hit me in the right places
And while I appreciated it’s
Ernestness and enthusiasm
It didn’t do what I wanted
And needed one to do
This, I told myself,
Is the compromise
I’ll make for a man
I could trust to always
Be honest with
and devoted to
me.
I lovingly called it
‘husband dick’
Because that was what
I thought you’d be.
It was my way of accepting
You and your
Shortcomings
and focusing, Instead,
on all the things
I was getting.
Perhaps I was wrong,
Clearly so, for being
Willing to compromise
So much, as the things
I was giving up or
Putting up with were
Hard as concrete
And the things I was
Hoping to get, thought
I was getting, were all
Hypothetical, existing only
In your spoken intentions
And, in the end, completely
imaginary.
